Have you ever wanted to hear Meat Loaf’s classic “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” live, only to that you’re about 35 years too late? Well fear no more, power ballad fans, as Jim Steinman, author of many of the songs from both Bat Out Of Hell I & II, has ensured that you will be able to hear those classic Meat Loaf tracks in his musical Jim Steinman’s Bat Out Of Hell. We here at Moshville have already looked into the most rocking musical ever written, but thought it was about time we really tore into it.
The musical contains a number of classic tracks from Meat Loaf’s most well-known and loved albums, Bat Out of Hell I & II including “You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth”, “Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad”, and, of course, “Bat Out Of Hell”. The musical will also feature two previously unreleased songs also written by Steinman, securing an evening of power ballads, new and old, presented by some of the finest young singers.
The plot of the musical mixes the angsty attitude from Meat Loaf’s albums and the apocalyptic style artwork which covered them to create a romantic adventure, following the love of Strat and Raven. Taking place in the post-cataclysmic city of Obsidian, we are introduced to Strat (Andrew Polec), the forever-young leader of the rebellious group of young men, The Lost, and his love, Raven (Christina Bennington), who is the daughter of the tyrannical dictator Falco (Rob Fowler). Their love is doomed from the offset, but they’ll battle against all odds to keep it alive. It’s like Romeo and Juliet, but with more motorcycles and leather.
Directed by Jay Scheib, Bat Out Of Hell is showing now at the Opera House in Manchester until the 8th of April. The musical will also be shown at the London Coliseum from June 5th through to the 22nd of July. Tickets are available now.
