Exclusive: Mrs Beckett list their influences as new video and album loom

Alternative power rock trio, Mrs Beckett will release their debut album, Unattractively Needy, on Friday 23rd September. The record is heralded by a new single, “Devastating”, arriving on Friday 16th September. For now, check out the video for the band’s past single, “Lucky Day”, below. With a slew of tastemakers praising the three-piece, we asked the guys to give us a breakdown of the tracks that have influenced them the most:

ZZ Top – Sharp Dressed Man

Rock as pop music, the very simple arrangement and the dance feel coupled with the great guitar sounds, the power of the riff and humour of the lyrics. This band were a big inspiration.

Motorhead – Going to Brazil (live)

Unmitigated chaotic noise and power that sounds almost out of control by a trio who all know exactly what they’re doing. In a trio every element has to pull its weight and that’s what’s happening on this track and then some. We spend a lot of time in rehearsal finding out what each instrument needs to be doing.

Little Richard – Bama Lama Bama Loo

The guitar sound again, and the mental drumming . The energy of this track gets me every time, and Little Richard screaming nonsensical lyrics with total commitment and belief. Just fabulous. The band aspires to this feel and energy live…

Steve Earle – My Old Friend The Blues

No one wants to hear anyone else whining about how sad and depressed they are, and the ironic humour of the brilliant lyrics here avoid sentimentality while genuinely describing depression in all its bleak misery. This kind of simple genius is what I aim for in all my songwriting, I wish my aim was better sometimes.

The Black Keys – Lonely Boy

Great riff, great song, old school glam rock but completely contemporary. Simple brilliance again. It illustrates what originality is I think.

David Bowie – Cracked Actor

The guitar sound, pure and simple. Never heard anything like it. I live to reproduce it. Aladdin Sane is one of the great albums.
