Italian melodic hardcore band What We Lost dropped their latest video “Chamomile” last month and it’s a blinder! We wanted to find out what makes these guys tick and their plans for the future. They were more than obliging to answer our Band of the Day questions.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We all come from the north of Italy: Simone, Andrea and Riccardo are from Modena, Enrico is from Reggio Emilia and Lorenzo is from Lodi.
How did you meet?
Andrea, Riccardo and Marco, our former guitarist, used to play together in a band before What We Lost. Then they held some auditions to start this project and met Simone and Enrico. In 2017 Lorenzo ed the band when Marco left.
How long have you been playing as a band?
We played our first live show as What We Lost in 2015, but we have been rehearsing and playing together since the end of 2013.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
The name What We Lost is not referred to a specific event or situation, but when we first found it we thought it was the right one. With time, every one of us found a very personal meaning behind this name.
What are your influences?
We love melodic hardcore in general. Our favorite bands are currently Casey, Counterparts, Being As An Ocean, Holding Absence, Movements, Pianos Become The Teeth…
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We don’t even know.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
The main theme of almost every lyric is the end of a romance, we are all sad dudes with broken hearts.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
We’ve played nearly 50 shows. As with every hardcore set, ours are quite brief, but extremely intense.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
This is a super funny story and we still laugh so bad when we think about it: at our very first show our bassist Enrico fell down twice on the drumkit during the first song. Luckily we could keep on playing and finish the set.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Riccardo plays a Fender Jaguar made in Mexico, a Marshall Jam 2000 head, Orange cab and Boss/TC Electronics pedals (OD and reverb).
Lorenzo plays a Fender Telecaster made in Mexico, an Orange TH30 head, Orange cab and Boss/TC Electronics pedals (delay, reverb, noise suppressor).
Enrico plays a Fender Precision made in Japan, Sansamp bass OD, compressor pedal, a Orange Terror bass head and Ampeg cab.
Andrea plays a Tama Superstar Hyperdrive kit, a DW 5002 pedal, Zildjian/Meinl cymbals set and Evans drumheads.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
Our latest singles ‘Beds’ and ‘Chamomile’ have been released via Dreambound youtube channel recently, go check them out.
What are your plans for 2018?
We are currently writing new songs, but at the moment we can’t tell you more. We have several shows booked all over Italy for the next few months and we are planning a tour to hit Europe/UK before the end of 2018.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
We would love to a Counterparts set, it would be mindblowing for us. As opener we would probably choose Rouge, a hardcore/beatdown band from Rome, they are incredible players and great friends.
From previous Band of the Day Stone Theory: what do you think of the relation between social media and being a band in this day and age?
Social media for a band are fundamental, we can say they are on the same level of the live experience: with a few clicks your music and contents can reach a large amount of people, from every part of the world. This is extremely powerful, thanks to them underground bands can grow a lot. Furthermore social media ensure real-time s, to receive kind words and messages of from fans worldwide is rewarding and inspiring.
From another BotD, Vanity: if you could go back in time and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
Never give up, because results will come with time.
And from Regulus: what’s your pre-show ritual or what’s the weirdest you’ve heard of?
We used to do yoga and some meditation before our gigs but we gave up. Now we fist bump to motivate each other just before starting the show.
