Band of the Day: Birdeatsbaby

We’re getting weird with you today…well, weirder.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

  • Mishkin – London
  • Hana – New Zealand
  • Garry – Scotland
  • Pablo – Italy

How did you meet?

Mishkin & Garry met in a mosh pit in Brighton, watching Gogol Bordello and formed a musical bond that has continued for the last 14 years. The band have changed around them but force of nature Hana Piranha ed 5 years ago and the three have been fierce friends since. Pablo’s alright… only joking, Pablo is our newest member but already our favourite drummer so far.

How long have you been playing as a band?

12 years since our first show.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It’s from a recurring nightmare Mishkin had when she was a child.

What are your influences?

Gin and witchcraft.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We’re mutli-instrumentalists that never stick to one genre. As long as it’s dark and progressive, it’s Birdeatsbaby.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Gin and… only joking. Our lyrical themes tend to be quite occult mixed with religious or sexual imagery. Mishkin writes about personal experiences but then magnifies them for a theatrical effect. We write about depression, death, gender issues, feminism, veganism, suicide and very rarely, love.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

It’s usually pretty intense, we tend to move among the audience and unsettle people. Usually we just try to channel what the song is about and reach the listener in a way that’s genuine. It feels very natural being on stage. I’ve lost count, probably about 500?

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Mishkin crawled across the bar at a backwater drinking t in Akron, Ohio to a bunch of hillbillies and one of them put money in her bra.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

My piano is a Roland FP-4. Garry plays a PRS Guitar and a P-Bass. Pablo plays TAMLA drums and Hana plays Yamaha electric violin.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our Better Man EP – it’s just out!

What are your plans for 2018?

Get to the end of the year without dying.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d open for Manson and have Hana Piranha .
