Band of the Day: Infirm of Purpose

Midlands metalcore today!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all from Derby, in the Midlands.

How did you meet?

Matt and Nathan have been friends since secondary school, they met Josh and Oliver mutual friends in their early teens and Nathan and Josh met Harrison through their previous band. We’re all pretty good friends outside of the band.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We’ve been together since 2015 but we started playing shows in 2017.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It’s from the Shakespearean play Macbeth, the full quote is ‘Infirm Of Purpose, give me the daggers, the sleeping and the dead are but as pictures.’ It came to Josh in school as a phrase that would be a decent band name.

What are your influences?

We’re predominantly a metalcore band and we originally set out to blend electronic and metalcore together like I See Stars or Enter Shikari. However, in recent years we’ve broadened out to other genres we enjoy. Our main 3 influences are Scarlxrd, Beyond All Recognition and Sylar.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We pretty much answered that in the question before, we blend our favourite genres together with some element of trend in mind and see what comes out. We love pretty much all genres of music if the production sounds good.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Ex-girlfriends usually, sometimes we write about fictional situations, love and sometimes topical themes.

What’s your live show like?

Energetic more than anything, loads of running around the venue and involving the audience in our set. Josh’s synth setup always seems to get a lot of attention from the crowd, something you don’t usually see in the live setup for a metal band.

How many shows have you played?

44 exactly.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

It’s not all that wild but when the crowd sing our lyrics back to us or even just give us their energy, it’s nice to see when you’ve made a connection with an audience.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Josh uses a wide array of equipment for his live setup, including: a Shure GLXD25 or an SM58 microphone, a Korg Microkorg, a Novation Mininova, a Roland SP-404, and a Numark NDX500. Nathan runs his rig via a Line-6 Pod HD 500, playing a Schecter Omen Extreme 6FR. Matt similarly uses a Line-6 in the Pod HD Pro. He also plays a Schecter in the Demon 6FR, as well as swapping out for a Ibanez RGIR27FE. Oli plays a Mapex Mars kit with Mapex hardware alongside. His cymbals are a collection of Paiste with a few home-cut accent pieces. He also uses Wincent sticks, and ends up breaking most of them. Harry, last but certainly not least uses his Ibanez Stagestar Bass, decorated liberally with a Supreme sticker, alongside a Digitech Droptune pedal. Overall, that’s what we use live.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We recently release a cover of “Funky Friday” by Dave, and just dropped our new one “Life Leads To Death”.

What are your plans for the rest of 2019?

Release some more music and play a couple more shows. Excited to see what our following thinks of our music, it’s been so long since we last released a track.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d love to Enter Shikari because of our musical similarities and we’d have Isolate us as they’re some of our favourite people to gig with. We’ve played so many shows with those guys and it’s always a good time.
