Band of the Day: The Fangs of the Dodo

Fresh from releasing their latest single “Hung By A Thread”, the mysterious Fangs of the Dodo are here to tell us some more about their band…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

The exact origin of The Fangs of the Dodo is classified, however some believe that the coordinates of the Fangs headquarters are listed as follows:

37°14′0″N 115°48′30″W / 37.23333°N 115.80833°W / 37.23333; -115.80833

How did you meet?

Little is known about how the band first met, some say they have been touring since the fall of Byzantium. Great gig. If a little dusty…

Their first recorded appearance in recent history however was in 2017, in the city of Bath. The group is believed to have been active in Bath and Bristol ever since.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name was the fantastical creation of Count Dodo and can be put down to a combination of his narcissistic personality disorder, schizophrenia, and acute nihilism.

What are your influences?

Fangs have often cited their major influences as Queens of the Stone Age, Muse and their collection of industrial paint thinner.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Fangs is best described as a psychopath’s take on modern rock. However, the band also falls under the umbrella genre of gothic rock / art pop.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Whilst Fangs claim not to have any overarching themes, it is said that the process for writing a hit Fangs song involves a late breakfast, some brawling, a rhyming thesaurus and a can of industrial paint thinner.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Attending a Fangs live show is much like being inside a washing machine whilst doing a barrel roll at 15,000 feet. Since they were seen to be active again in 2017, the band is thought to have played somewhere in the region of 50 shows up and down the country.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

At one gig at the Dead Famous Liquor Lounge a few years ago, HAZARD broke free from his restraints and fatally wounded several of the audience. Again, great gig though. Strangely, haven’t been asked back…?

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

The pedalboards of The Fangs of the Dodo are a national secret upheld by the auspices of The Ministry of Defence. However, the rest of their gear, as requested by the Freedom of Information act is as follows:

The Guardsman – Gibson SG (‘midnight blue’ and not in fact ‘black’, as it may seem to the untrained eye), Fender Evil Twin amplifier, radio jack lead, Ernie Ball regular gauge strings.

Count Dodo – Warwick Vampyre Bass Guitar, Ampeg 4×12 Cab, Warwick head (features include a separate clean and distorted signal, and a strong burning smell).

HAZARD – Mapex Armoury 22” 5 piece kit, Vic Firth drum sticks, Ludwig 14” snare, Evans drum head, Paiste pst5 cymbals, Bosphorous 17” thin crash, Chad Smith signature 19”, Sabian Holy China, weapons grade plutonium

Cinder – Roland XV-5050 synth, M-Audio Keystation, lighter fluid.

The Prisoner – Marshall DSL 40watt Combo, Gibson Les Paul (black), D’addario heavy bottom strings, Butterfly switchblade.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

There have been some rumours of a UK tour and a new record underway. According to sources, Fangs had also planned a homecoming tour of the underworld, but have had to postpone this due to the uncertainties surrounding Coronavirus.

What are your plans for 2020?

Survive.

If successful, the band will go on to release an EP, and as many as 3 new singles before the year is up. Sources say that the new EP is called ‘The Curtained Sleep’ and is set for release on April 3rd.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d like to Alanis Morisette and be opened by Ozzy Osborne.
