Canadian proggers AsZension have put out their third studio album Portals in September. The record brings seven songs of instrumental progressive rock with metal influences. The mastermind behind the band, Kevin Thiessen, talked with Moshville.
Alright, first thing’s first. Before we dive into all the music stuff, how’s life?
Life’s good. I am enjoying the fall season here in Canada and preparing for what is sure to be a long winter. I am also very pleased to have just released some new music as well.
Speaking of new music, you have an album. What can people expect from Portals?
Portals is an album with many different moods, colours and textures. There are a few twists and turns, so expect to be taken on a journey. I would also add that the new record has a slightly heavier tone to previous Aszension albums, is a bit more beefy in of production values, and further explores the fusion of world music influences with metallic, prog rock.
What was it like working on the album?
Working on Aszension albums has always been a joyous experience for me. Portals was particularly fun because I was working with nearly the same lineup of musicians from the previous album. So there was a sense of familiarity there, which allowed for greater development of musical chemistry.
Are there any touring plans in to Portals?
Yes, we are planning some shows around Western Canada to begin with, and hope to expand to other countries soon.
While we are on the subject of touring, what countries would you love to tour?
It would be cool to visit Italy or . Both countries have stunning scenery, and a very diverse musical history.
Who and what inspires you the most?
There are many sources, but the biggest one has been my affinity with nature. Having grown up in the rocky mountains of western canada, a particularly beautiful area, I was always surrounded by majestic scenery. Being connected with nature can awaken a creative space within you, that’s not generally found elsewhere.
What other genres of music do you listen to? Have any of the other genres you listen to had any impact on your playing?
I’ve been enjoying many different styles of music over the years. Mostly ranging from Classical and Jazz, to World, Folk, Ambient and Electronic. Even film scores and soundtracks. All of which have impacted my playing in one way or another.
