Road To Bloodstock 2022 – Novacrow

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Novacrow who play the New Blood stage on the Saturday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Kitty and Jonyx are from Wolverhampton, and Freddy is half Italian and half Brazilian. But we all currently live in Liverpool.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We started playing together around September 2013.

Where does the name of the band come from?

From a dictionary. Smart ass answer aside, that’s actually what happened – Jonyx flipped to two random pages in the dictionary and pointed to random words. Those words were “atrophy” and “foot”, so we just went with Novacrow instead.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We love writing music that we would personally enjoy, and since we all have very eclectic music tastes, we end up with a big blend of genres. We want to avoid writing songs that are too similar and our album is full of variation and incorporating a lot of different influences. We’re also not afraid to experiment with shit and have some fun – some of our songs have featured kazoo solos, slide whistles, congas, theremins, you name it!

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Hmm it’s hard to answer this question without it sounding like we’re massive egomaniacs, but fortunately for us that’s exactly what we are so here goes: OUR LIVE SHOW WILL BLOW YOUR TITS OFF.  We are known for our very energetic performances, constantly dancing like everyone is watching. We strive to be as entertaining as humanly possible. At Bloodstock, we’re gonna go absolutely apeshit on stage. Like a bunch of Tasmanian devils on crack. We’re not kidding. Don’t believe us? Come and see.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Freddy went last year and had an absolute blast! He’s been to many festivals in his life and Bloodstock has definitely been one of his favourites. At the tender age of 27, we didn’t think he had it in him to binge drink for 5 days running but oh boy were we proven wrong. From bin jousting to walking around with a giant inflatable T-Rex to having panic attacks on his last night, there wasn’t a single dull moment throughout the whole festival. T’was great and we’re so excited to head down together! Kitty hasn’t been for a few years, but has attended in the past as press and had an epic time.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the Merseyside region. The whole experience was so much fun (especially after a few quiet years of lockdown). Every band that we played with was top notch and the quality everyone brought to the table was fantastic!

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

WAHOOO!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Lots of brand spanking new songs! With a 13 track album being released very soon, we thought this would be an excellent way for us to show it off, so we’re picking the most high energy and fun songs from the album for the lovely folks at Bloodstock. We’re also going to be playing the best of our delicious catalogue, so be sure to add our tracks to your favourite playlists to get ready.

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

Freddy: There’s a few bands we’d like to catch on the day we’re playing (dear reader – WE ARE PLAYING ON THE SATURDAY), but we really hope to catch Jinjer’s set! Freddy was really looking forward to seeing them last year but they had to pull out unfortunately. We’d also like to catch Sister Shotgun’s set – we played with them quite a lot back in the day and it’d be great to see them perform again after so long!

Kitty: Tonnes, lots I’ve not seen live for ages, some I’ve never seen and a few fabulous friends!  I’m excited for Gwar, Bloodywood, Nekrogoblin, Dimmu Borgir, Jinjer, Sylosis, Lorna Shore, Avatar, Party Cannon, Discharge. L.O.G, Killing Joke, Dark Funeral, Cattle Decapitation, Butcher Babies, Life of Agony, Malevolence, Ill Nino, Skarlett Riot, Sister Shotgun. Now I know by listing all of these, I’ve almost certainly guaranteed we will clash… No regrets.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’M GLAD YOU ASKED! We’ve recently released our first single “Hollow Armour”, taken from our debut album Look At Me Now, which you can pre-order at novacrowofficial.com. With a scheduled release date set in late September, we’re currently working on getting our merch ready in of the album, along with working on some more music videos for other singles we will be releasing in the running up to the album. We’ve worked incredibly hard on the album over the past year and a half and we’re now planning for the next phase of the band’s journey on the back of its sheer power and creative juices.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Freddy once wore velcro pants at our performance at Metal days 2017 that he tore off on our last song. He also once jumped off an 8 foot wall and tore his bass strap on the landing. Oh and once he slipped on some grass and face planted mid-song. We’re starting to think we need a new bass player…

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Gluten-free beer for Kitty, top shelf whiskey for Jonyx, and whatever Freddy can get his grubby little hands on. Our drummers aren’t allowed to have alcohol before shows anymore, not since the incident…
