Road To Bloodstock 2022 – Desenser

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here is Tyler from Desenser who play the New Blood stage on the Sunday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all from in and around the Steel City of Sheffield.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We first began as teenagers in college writing our first fast angsty punk songs and taking them around venues in our city of Sheffield. After a short break for university and travelling, followed by COVID, we returned and nailed our new sound ready to get out there. So, although we’ve played together for a while, we’re pretty much fresh on the scene!

Where does the name of the band come from?

Desenser comes from the lesser-used scientific term “desense noise”, roughly meaning “the destruction of sound as it es from one medium to another”.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I think as a band we all have such a variety of influences and playing styles that a lot of our music feels like a big mixing pot of different ideas and genres. We play fast jagged riffs that drop into large ethereal sections, which follow into heavy breakdowns and pop choruses. I feel it makes us stand out, as a lot of people can find something to catch their ear in our music. We love this variety and love the unique sonic journey it creates within our tracks, which we think definitely sets us apart.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

To make connections through live music and to elicit responses from the crowd is the best feeling in the world and is why we love playing so much. Every gig we play we aim to generate some kind of reaction from the crowd and this is what we thrive on. As a frontman, performance is crucial for our show and I am extremely energetic, and drive our live performance with everything I have, which is probably why I feel like I’ve been in a car crash after every gig!

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

I personally have never been, but have heard hundreds of times about the sense of community at this festival and how dedicated the punters are to discovering new music and celebrating their favourite bands. We have only recently begun to play to metal crowds, as we originally were gigging in peculiar lineups, but ever since we have, we have been blown away by the metal community’s love for the music. Every gig, people have been so welcoming to us and truly a pleasure to play for. So, we are so excited to play at the biggest festival this scene has to offer.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We came second in the Sheffield final to a great band called Steel Mage who are playing the New Blood stage on Saturday. Fortunately, Simon enjoyed our set so much that he gave us a slot the following day – it feels truly amazing to be a wildcard!

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Beyond excited – I started floating round the room.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We absolutely love playing our new stuff, it showcases a great blend of many different influences and is the best representation of our band so far! It is far more metal-influenced than our debut EP, which was rooted in punk music, so we are playing as much of our new stuff as possible – alongside maybe a surprise Desenser-fied cover…

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

We’d be devastated to miss Killing Joke and Lamb Of God, but luckily a lot of the other bands we are most hyped to see are playing on the other days, so we can be pretty stress-free on the day we play!

What are you working on at the moment?

We have just released two brand new singles from our EP release Aurora Equitum which will be released on the 19th of August, so it’s all guns blazing to promote it and to show people the current evolution of our band!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I think the wildest I’ve ever seen is a band called Heck who reformed a gig at this year’s 2000 Trees festival. I have honestly never seen a band with such raw, incredible energy, literally putting their bodies on the line for the show. It was such an intense experience seeing them utilise every part of the tent and stage, and it’s really inspired me going forward.

The wildest thing we’ve done (so far) was probably hanging from the ceiling at a recent show we played. It was a pretty spontaneous decision, I was just hoping I wasn’t hanging from the plumbing pipe!

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Honestly, for me I never drink before a performance. As the frontman, I solely rely on the raw energy of performing live – that is more than enough to get me fired up and ready to smash it! But afterwards for me it has to be an ale for me so I’m hoping bloodstock have a good choice available.
