Road To Bloodstock 2023: Beyond Your Design

Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Beyond Your Design play the New Blood stage on the Sunday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Derby, in the East Midlands.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We formed in 2016 which would make it 7 years however, Chayce has only been with us for 3 years and Sam for only a couple of months!

Where does the name of the band come from?

Beyond Your Design is about suring expectations. In the early days of the band, we were outsiders to the local scene, never given the time of day and no one expecting us to go anywhere. But through our own hard work and self-belief, we have exceeded these and gone far beyond what anyone thought we could.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

As much as we know we’re just another drop in the ocean of metalcore bands, we feel we bring something different to the table. Our songwriting is influenced by the early 2000’s metalcore greats such as Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine, Arch Enemy etc. In a pool of bands in a genre where everyone sounds the same these days, we bring a nostalgic feel whilst keeping up with the technicality, and the heaviness, of the modern metalcore trends.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

It is exactly that; a show. Every time we step onto a stage, we aim to deliver the greatest show anyone in the audience has experienced. A performance of our craft that we have worked tirelessly on to perfect. But we also strive to make our shows as inclusive as possible and to provide an escape from the mundane of everyday life. Everyone is welcome at a BYD show, enjoy is however you like, but we’ll enjoy it together.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

It’s the premier heavy metal event of the year and its reputation has only grown over recent times. The sense of community and unity is legendary. Rob has attended Bloodstock since 2015. Chayce has attended for the previous few years, and we can both vouch for how welcoming and special Bloodstock is to those who attend.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the Metal 2 The Masses Nottingham event. This was our third time partaking in the M2TM initiative having done Leicester and Leeds prior, but for obvious reasons; this was by far our favourite one.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

I can do it in one word – elation.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A compilation of our own favourite songs of ours, a mix of old and new.

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

Oh man, the lineups are always exceptional!

Meshuggah and Knocked Loose will be a highlight. We’ve all wanted to see Killswitch Engage, Decapitated and In Flames for so many years. But I think I speak for all of us when I say that so many of our friends are playing this year that it’s an honour to have our name included amongst them!

Those Once Loyal and Daybreaker on the Jager stage are gonna be sick! InVisions on the Sophie Stage we know will kill it. Plus our friends in Broken Calling, Devils Henchmen, Elimination, Nameless, Bloodmores, Outergods, and To Obey A Tyrant on the New Blood will be incredible as always!

What are you working on at the moment?

Our only focus right now is on making sure we bring the best performance the New Blood has ever seen. But after that, it’s back on to songwriting for our next record!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Oh it’s got to be the time that Rob played a guitar solo while on someone’s shoulders during headline show at our hometown venue – The Hairy Dog – a wild night that finished off like that, we’ll never forget it!

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Water. Water. Water. Please drink as much water as possible. It’s meant to be a hot one, and we don’t want anyone getting dehydrated during the weekend.
