Just about to go to bed and I happened to flick through facebook one last time… to find a torrent of “R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman” messages from more bands and musicians than I care to count.
The story’s confirmed on various sources – Billboard and CNN amongst them.
Jeff was just 49 and, from what I can gather, died of liver failure which may or may not have been related to the skin disease necrotising fasciitis that he contracted a couple of years ago and which had kept him from playing and touring with Slayer.
Needless to say, Jeff was a huge influence and inspiration to a generation of metal guitarists being a founding and permanent member of Slayer. He’ll be sadly missed by many.
He leaves behind a wife, sister and two brothers. My thoughts are with them right now.
Kick ass, Jeff. Someone, somewhere is now getting to see you team up with Dimebag…
