This from the press release: “INFERNÖ Records is proud to announce the re-release on CD & Cassette of the first full length album of the promising all-girl THRASH METAL band from Singapore TORMENTRESS !”
I am curious to know if Tormentress are the only all-girl thrash band from Singapore or if it’s a thing over there. Annoyingly I didn’t get to catch any decent rock or metal acts when I was over there (though I did see DJ Jazzy Jeff at a festival entirely failing to mix records or judge the crowd properly – he was shit). Anyway…
This is a thrash album. Old school. There’s no other genre that the band could even be claimed to be toying with. It’s even got that old-school sound to it, like it was recorded in a garage which is completely forgiveable (or perhaps deliberate) for music of this type – raw, harsh, fast, no frills.
The vocals are more along the lines of Max Cavalera‘s on Sepultura’s Bestial Devastation EP rather than later albums – quite guttural.
Alongside a smattering of fairly predictable, though enjoyable, songs are a couple of absolute pearls. “Trash & Torment”, “Infinite Oneness” and “Why” are probably my top three, though their cover of Kreator’s “Tormentor” is a great homage to the original.
Don’t expect any surprises and you won’t be disappointed. If there weren’t enough quality thrash albums produced in the 80’s for you, then this will help make up the numbers.
Release date is September 21st. Comes with an 12-page booklet. Available as regular CD & Digipack CD. Cassette version limited to 100 copies! Get your copy from Infernö Records.
