Aarni is the brand new EP from Hammer Of The Sky, a band comprised of Aleksi Martikainen and Kimmo Huhtala from the cold but beautiful country of Finland. This EP is short, only being four songs and 20 minutes in length. This, however, doesn’t take anything from some of the finest musical compositions I’ve heard in quite some time.
The pair have created something combining folk and ambient styles of music together so well it feels like something out of a major motion picture. The EP may only be four songs long but I think these four songs are somewhat of a statement of intent as to what to expect when the full record comes out. Hammer of the Sky have created something so simple in of sound and yet so powerful in of creating an atmosphere that you can easily lose yourself in it for as long as you want. Given the craziness going on in the world right now, it’s really not a bad idea!
Hammer Of The Sky have something that I’ve heard a few bands attempt to do before but never quite as well. The ambient sounds all work as one yet provide multiple layers between themselves which provide huge depth. I promise you will be listening to this EP again and again and on every listen you will hear something new.
Aarni is a masterfully constructed musical offering that, with the right mindset, you won’t become bored with anytime soon.
