EP Review: Shrines – Ghost Notes

After a 3 year-long hiatus London’s heaviest post-punk outfit Shrines return with new EP Ghost Notes.

Opening track “Nexus” incorporates some really nice post-punk tones, but still maintains the band’s sound from their debut album with some wonderful guitar solos and melancholic vocals. Get ready to imagine the lights and smoke machines as “Connexion” needs to be played on a dance floor among a sea of black,. This may only be a 4-track EP but this is hands down my highlight song from it.

“Relics” fires in with some wonderful prog elements with some great guitar tones and drum patterns. The final track on the EP, “White Light”, is simultaneously the most melodic and the heaviest of the release. It starts off with some emotive piano which lingers briefly before building into a fast-paced  juggernaut for the remainder.

Vocalist & guitarist Samuel J Loynes comments:

It has been some time in the making but we are pleased for our “Ghost Notes” EP to see the light of day, even during this strange and restrictive time. Perhaps it can serve to hit the ears of those that need it and provide a positive moment during our collective time of reflection and uncertainty.

Catchy post-punk tinged with the right amount of melancholy.
