Album Review: Psychostick – “…And Stuff”

Everyone’s had that phase where they realise they’re behind on something, but you just don’t have a clue how to do it, so you just rattle off any old crap just to make it look like you’ve been busy, while in reality you’re really planning on just putting things off a bit longer until you can be bothered making at least a decent effort, and hope nobody will notice, or at least be grateful to get something and get off your back so you can just enjoy a beer.

Welcome to “…And Stuff”, Psychostick’s collection of B-sides and re-recordings designed to make you forget that they’ve not released an album for four years.

With some degree of fairness we have to point out that Psychostick were one of the busiest bands we were aware of throughout lockdown (and after), churning out an impressive number of livestreams. And there’s the fact that the album is a CD-stuffing 80 minutes. Plus there’s a load of stuff people might not have heard before. And it’s all pretty good. And nobody’s forcing you to buy it. But still, come on you lazy sods and write some new material. Seriously, we have rights, you know.

I mean, even if you have got Patrick Stewart* to record some intros and included (finally) a version of “The Sombrero Prophecy”. And even if you’ve finally managed to not include any songs about food, until you do include songs about food (“Chimichanga”, “Eat An Entire Pizza by Myself”, “Mi Queso”). Expecting forgiveness for putting some of those cover/parody versions released as singles onto a collection (“Ghostbuster”, “Galaxy Song”, “Metaldonna Medley”, “Mi Queso” again)? Or appealing to your spotty, friendless nerd audience (“Mega Man”, “AVGN”)? Think we won’t notice that the CD is only full because you’re recorded a perfectly-lengthened version of “We Ran Out Of CD Space Again”?

Because, dammit, you’re right. Some Psychostick is better than no Psychostick and with no new material, this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part. And Psychostick are just the guys to do it.
