Lesser beings are a new beast, and a noisy one. They feature who appear in many other bands you may have heard of: Coffin Mulch, Kingpin ,Hard Stare, Forever Machine. Given the sounds that those bands make you wouldn’t think their would need another outlet. Well, you’d think wrong. These guys obviously have some issues. To quote their EPK, they aim to create “the most aggressive, bleak, punishing riff-based racket they can”.
Long story short: mission accomplished. Lesser Beings is five tracks of visceral hatred that sounds like it was recorded in anger, coated in bile and given a good kicking until it was really pissed off before being squished into little packets called mp3 files. The band have managed to contain that anger enough so that the whole doesn’t sound messy. Despite the mainly harsh (sometimes growled) vocals, the frenetic drums, and the speedily strummed guitars it never comes across as pure noise. The little breakdowns are superbly timed, and give you a chance to really bang your head.
Of the five songs, I’d pluck out “Judgement Time” and final number “The Cycle Repeats” as the best ones, but it’s a close call. If you’re into really mad, in-your-face, angry metal that doesn’t want to be pinned down in any particular genre, then you need to be listening to Lesser Beings.
