After featuring Málaga’s Break The Senses as one of our Bands of the Day back in 2017, I was pleased to finally see the two-thirds-female rock trio recently at our local rock music venue, Louie Louie, Estepona.
Singer Rocio and bassist Priscilla have been friends since high school, playing music and writing songs together ever since. Drummer Marce ed them some years later after they convinced him to jump ship from another band. With combined influences cited as Muse, Biffy Clyro and Nirvana, it would have been rude not to pay attention to these guys.
The award-winning threesome gel well together on stage and you can tell there is a comfort between them and that lovely unspoken communication that musicians use which creates an extra air of magic.
I’d been giving their first album a good listen beforehand and had earmarked track “Eternal Life” as my favourite, so it was great to hear that in the flesh and the band brought it to life brilliantly well. Title track “Perfect Nature” was also a highlight for me and, as with other songs played from the album, they pack a much bigger punch live and demonstrate that this trio are at their best on the stage and out of the studio.
That said, I am eagerly awaiting getting my hands on the new album which has now been recorded and mixed and will soon be mastered and is due for launch later this year. Tracks “Lost” and “Monster’s World” offered us a tasty sneak preview.
As the venue wasn’t packed and Rocio told me she had a cold, they opted to play a more light-hearted set and so threw in a few crowd-pleasing covers. I’m generally not a fan of covers but I have to it that their rendition of The Pixies’ “Where is my Mind” was hauntingly captivating and would make a sturdy accompaniment to their own far stronger songs. It was also heart-warming to see a timely homage to the late Dolores O’Riordan with a nice chunky, chuggy, heavy cover of “Zombie”.
Whether their own songs or covers, I loved soaking up the strength of Priscilla’s bass coming through at every opportunity, backed up with Marce’s powerful drumming and of course all topped off with Rocio’s earthy vocals.
As long as bands like Break The Senses continue to write original music and influence people, especially showcasing the unrelenting talent of women who can rock – then all is good in the world.
