When it comes to quality rock music Wales is a country that punches well above its weight. From the fertile soil of South Wales come Tribeless, a band who’re carrying a bright torch lit by artist as diverse Badfinger, Budgie, Tigertailz, Persian Risk, Skindred and Man (phew!). What Tribeless share with this eclectic bunch is a strong focus on melody and they seem well equipped to stand tall with their illustrious predecessors.

Now operating as a four piece Tribeless immediately evidence a hard hitting sound and “Formed By Us” comes out with all fists flying. However, they aren’t all about pure bludgeon and there’s plenty of light and shade, almost ambient interludes, which act as a foil with each highlighting the other. Tribeless have a busy sound and there’s a lot going on from web-like guitar lines to pounding drums via Lydia McDonald’s soulful vocals. It’s a kaleidoscopic listen that pulls your ears in several directions and credit to producer Romesh Dodangoda (Motōrhead, Twin Atlantic) for providing an expansive, uncluttered sound which gives all the instrumentation room to breathe.
Equally vital is second track “Impulses”. Both heavy and ethereal Craig Williams’ guitar lines wish to fly away but they’re grounded by drummer Max Rhead who powers the song forward with military muster. The result is what, in modern jargon, would be termed a ‘rock banger’ but like its companion it is an earworm of the highest order that’ll crawl around your cranium all day.
