Grayscale Season have gone all independent for their self-released album Do You Like Violence, and “Luxury Depression” is the first single to spawn from it. The single is out on February 4th, with the album following on April 15th.
They opted to fly solo so they had 100% creative control over their output, and the net result is (in the words of bassist/vocalist Adam Dahlman), “the best music we have ever created.” On the strength of this one single, they’ve made a brave but correct decision. “Luxury Depression” could so easily follow into the trap of being heavy for heavy’s sake, but instead it blends ferocity with melody.

It opens in a very post-metal, in-your-face manner. This blows over into something a little more laid back, and then these two styles collide for a while before the drop and some real headbanging segments. There is definitely a bit of experimentation going on here and, on the whole, it all pays off.
Lyrically the subjects this song explores really cuts close to the bone. We all grew up in a bubble of welfare and suckling the Swedish state teats in a nice suburb to Gothenburg. And still people were obsessed with superficial issues. So, I tried to approach it from two angles, taking the part of both the angel and the devil on their shoulders. One saying how trash their contributions are and the other soothing them with explaining how they are just a product of their surroundings and have absolutely no ability.
